Business Innovation and Investment Visas

The business innovation and investment visas offer a two-stage pathway to permanent residence, for people with recent business ownership or investment experience. There are three streams of visa available:

  • The Business Innovation stream is for people who want to own and manage a new or existing business in Australia.
  • The Investor stream is for people who make a designated investment of AUD$1.5 million in an Australian state or territory.
  • The Significant Investor stream is for people who are willing to invest at least AUD5 million into complying investments in Australia.

Applications can be lodged by invitation only. For these visas, you need to lodge an expression of interest on the Department of Home Affairs' Skillselect website. Depending on your personal and business attributes, you may receive an invitation from the Department to apply for a visa. If invited to apply, you must do so within 60 days of the date of invitation.

For the provisional visa, you must meet minimum asset/investment criteria, and show a proven business history. There are age limits at the time of application, for the Investor stream and the Business Innovation stream.

You may be able to apply for permanent residence, once your business/investment has continued for the required period, and meets the specific requirements for the stream under which your provisional visa was granted.
